Last night while I was working on a few digital drawings, I started thinking about how little progress my generation has made in social justice and how inspired I am to see so many amazing and brave young people from my daughter's generation pick up and carry on with the fight that has yet to be won. This portrait is of a friend's daughter - a passionate young woman (yes, I 'borrowed' a photo of hers - forgive me for that) and, as I was drawing, I realized how much more mature she was looking than her actual age and it worried me for a while that I couldn't capture her bright youthfulness. And then it occurred to me - she is so much older in spirit, beyond her years. She is passionate for equal justice - she is having to surrender her youth and innocence to fight for something that should be hers without having to do one thing more except be in this world. So, here is my small offering in recognition and admiration for all the young people who are fighting and raising their voices peacefully but with passion for equal rights and equal justice.
