When I was young we had a neighborhood bakery – Waldorf’s Bakery – that served the lovely Ingleside area in the town where I grew up. It was the go-to place for wedding cakes, baby showers and special treats for festive occasions. My favorite was the iced thumbprint cookies. I can still remember the small white bag with three small cookies iced in pink, white and green nestled inside it.

Today baked goods have taken on a whole new level of artistry. With the rise in popularity of baking shows – my favorite, of course, is The British Baking Show – it’s no wonder that cakes and lavish tarts and cookies are gaining popularity. Gone are the days when the local bake shop can turn out the fantastic creations that are now being created in home kitchens across the nation.

Looking for signature treats?
A quick look on social media will most likely turn up one of these talented bakers in your area. One of my favorites is Pine Cone Bakery in the Atlanta, Georgia area. It’s owned by Katie Davison, a “self-taught baker and cake enthusiast” who makes the most delightful cake and party creations I’ve ever seen. Looking for a Unicorn cake? How about a ultra-lovely wedding cake that is as delicious as it is beautiful? Or you might fancy a Frida Kahlo theme?
Don’t take my word for it – visit the Pine Cone Bakery on Instagram or the Pine Cone Bakery Facebook page for details.
So, is it makery or bakery?
My thoughts? These culinary creations are both – combined into a delicious art form that is satisfying both to the eyes and to the taste buds.
So, art can be an indulgence – in more ways than one.
